Have you started a new organizing system recently? How’s that working out?
New Organizing System
You did everything right.
Went to the store and maxed out the credit card on just the right containers, boxes and baskets.
You labeled all the containers, boxes and baskets…_________________(insert meticulously labeled items here).
And your system just isn’t working!
Your family still puts everything in the wrong place and you are left scratching your head, wondering where you went wrong.
You really want to know the secret to why it’s not working?
Organizing doesn’t work!
“But Tiffany! You have a blog dedicated to organizing. The systems looks so pretty! The Container Store is like heaven. How can you say that?”
Here’s the hard truth. Organizing isn’t a solution. Organizing your stuff is a Band-Aid solution.
Decluttering, or getting rid of your stuff is the solution. No matter how pretty that new organizing system is…it will NEVER work if you don’t purge, edit , declutter or whatever else you want to call it.
I know. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but it’s the kind of medicine you need to take if you want your house to look like a Pottery Barn catalog…and that’s the goal, right? 😉
How to Fix It?
Let’s start out with a simple exercise. I’m not going to tell you to go through the house and pick up every item and ask that item if it loves you back. There is no assignment for a certain number of garbage bags to take out. Right now, I am just going to ask you to take a look at all of your stuff.
When you have stuff, you buy more stuff, and then you need to find a place for all the stuff.
It’s time to purge the stuff.
Don’t think of everything you own as stuff. I want you to think of the things you love as something else, maybe your possessions, your treasures, your valuables. Whatever you can label them to make them mean something.
You need to only keep the things that really mean something to you. The items that REALLY matter. The necessities and the things that make you super happy.
Your stuff? It’s not making you happy.
How many times did I say stuff in this post?
Enough to make you want to purge yours? 😉

I have so many stuff. I do think about how to keep all of them in the neatly way but I cannot. The truth is we should purge our stuff which doesn’t necessary but sometimes we can’t remember which one we really want to keep or not ( 🙂 ). It might take a time to do but as you said, this is the only way we can do, right? After I read your post, I think I will look at my stuff and have a decision with them (haha!)

Hey Richard!
Yes, it can take some time….but looking to see what you truly value and love makes it much easier to part with those things that you just don’t! Don’t give up! It’s soooo worth it!
