Easy Beginner Blankets

Well hi there!

I’m sure most of you, who sew, can figure out how to, if you haven’t already hundreds of times sewn a receiving blanket. And I’m sure everyone has seen these fleece tie blankets…they are easy, inexpensive and all sorts of cozy to cuddle up in. These easy beginner blankets are perfect for kids to start sewing on, and that’s what I decided to start my kids on this past week….although we weren’t making them for ourselves. More on that in a moment…

Easy Receiving Blanket

First off these super easy receiving blankets.

Supplies:

1 1/4 yard of snuggle flannel

1 1/4 yard of coordinating snuggle flannel

Coordinating Thread

These are so simple, and are so fantastic! I loved having these with my babies…and I have to admit that making these made me want to wrap a little newborn in one!

Turn your two coordinating fabrics right sides in and line up edges.

Sew around edges and just leave about an three inch opening.

Turn blanket out using the opening and tuck in edges, you can iron this if you want so that it stays closed while you finish it.

You can do a straight stitch on this part, but I love using a fun decorative stitch to add a little extra cuteness. Just sew all around the edge making sure the opening gets sewed together.

All done! So sweet, and makes a perfect gift.

Next super easy Fleece tie blankets…

Fleece Tie Blankets

Supplies:

1 1/2 yard fleece

Scissors

My kids loved making these, such a sense of accomplishment to finish one!

First you need to cut off any selvage or any other kind of weird edge that fleece sometimes has.

Next you just cut some strips on the top and bottom of the blanket. I cut my strips about an inch thick and about 4 inches long.

Finally you just tie knots on each strip.

Super easy, super cozy and super fun!

Now what to do with all of these fun blankets we made?

My darling friend Kim from A girl and a glue gun contacted me about a wonderful cause that I couldn’t turn down. A BUNCH of other bloggers and myself are making blankets to donate to the cause. My kids all have blankets that have been made with love and in return have been loved to pieces (sometimes literally). As a family we made 6 blankets to donate, and now that they know how, they want to make lots more. 🙂

Here is a little backstory of this fantastic and easy opportunity to make a child feel loved. This is from Kim’s sister’s neighbor, and something no parent should have to go through…but they have turned a sad story into one of love.

This would be such a great activity to do during the holidays to help your kids learn about service. A couple of my kids teared up a bit while talking about the kids that will get to cuddle up in the blankets they made, such a sweet moment that I will always remember.
