Hi, my name is Tiffany and I have a throw pillow addiction. I hear admitting it is the first step to recovery…I’m just not sure I’m ready to recover yet…unless it means recovering another pillow! I am constantly making or purchasing new pillows for my couches and bed. There is something so satisfying about whipping up enough DIY throw pillows in an afternoon that the whole couch looks different, not to mention the whole room. I decided to go with some reds for Valentines day, and made one just for the holiday, but the others can be around anytime.
DIY Throw Pillows
Now, I’m not going to go into much detail on how to make most of these, but I will give you a few hints and tricks. Take for instance my big guys here.
For these, I just measured my existing large pillow covers and then cut my fabric to the same dimensions, leaving about a 1/4 inch seam allowance. These are stuffed pillows, they are not covering a form. I didn’t cut two pieces, I just cut one long piece and folded it in half. I put the wrong sides together, sewed around the edges and left enough space to turn it inside out and stuff it. I like to overstuff my pillows, to make them good and fluffy. To sew up the hole, I use an invisible stitch. If you don’t know how to do this, check out this tutorial HERE, it is a good one.
For my smaller red ones I made envelope cases for the inserts that I have. These always are nice to have on hand, they can be taken off and changed and stored easily enough. Not to mention they are super simple to whip up!
For these, I do the same thing in measuring the cases, I take existing ones, cut that much plus enough for a seam allowance…BUT I add an extra 6-8″ or more in length depending on the size of the pillow for overlapping the envelope part.
I fold the edges over on the top and bottom of the fabric, and pin and sew to give it a nice clean look.
Then I measure with the existing case again, the size of the pillow and fold the new case around it and pin so that I can sew the sides.
Then I just sew up the sides, turn it out and have a great new pillow case for my throw pillows!
For my valentine pillow I made a long white stuffed one out of duck cloth. For the hearts I used some fat quarters and this stuff called Phoomph. You just stick your fabric to one side, cut out your shapes and then you can adhere it to another fabric!
.
Basically I just put stickers on my new pillow! They have stayed on great, no iron or anything else necessary. Makes for an easy decorative pillow without a lot of fuss!
I kind of like it a lot!
