Yesterday I showed you my 3 year old boy who carries around a pink and purple glittery doctor bag everywhere he goes and the accompanying doctor costume he is wearing for Halloween. Today I will share what my daughter is obsessed with…nasty, disgusting, flying rodents. She LOVES bats! Is that weird to anyone else? Most of the time she’s as girly as they come, but she finds the repulsive little things adorable. If you are looking for children who like traditional gender stereotypical things at the Hewlett home, you will be very confused. Strange little children, must be their homeschooling…hmmmm. Anywho. All my cute girl wanted to be for Halloween is a bat, so a DIY bat costume was on the docket. For the outfit she just pulled on a black leotard (a long sleeve black tee would also work), some black leggings (if you are making it for a boy, some black sweats would do nicely), and of course her ballet skirt because after all, it is a girl bat (duh mom)! For the ears just some folded pieces of felt hot glued to a headband worked great. The wings are really the only sewing project here, and I promise you, they are super easy!
DIY Bat Costume
Supplies:
- Felt
- Scissors
- Elastic
- Some bat creature to look at for a pattern (or just look at some online)
- One of your child’s long sleeved shirts (or if you are making it for yourself, one of your shirts…my husband loves this and he might be a bat with her next year).
Directions:
- Fold over your felt so that it is doubled (I ended up using about 1/2 a yard of wide felt, I think fleece would also work, but you want a stiffer fabric). Place your shirt on top to see how wide you need your wings.
- Fold your shirt in half length ways and draw out your pattern on one side using a marker, just go to the shirt.
- Be sure to cut a rounded part for the neck just like the shirt. Cut out the half pattern through both pieces of felt.
- Fold over and cut out other side.
- You should now have 2 identical pieces of felt in your desired batty shape. This method would also work well for prettier costumes, like butterflies, birds and other things less creepy.
- Sew both pieces together all around the edges and then starting at the points sew straight up so you can get the vein-ish look, and also some extra stability in the wings.
- Cut four pieces of elastic long enough for your child’s arm to fit through comfortably and sew one near where their underarm will be and then one between their wrist and their elbow. I sewed mine right on the lines where I sewed down on the points, so that they blended in a little better.
- Slide it on just like a jacket! And when her arms are down, it fits like a jacket, so it should add a good amount of warmth on a chilly October night!
She’s a little excited about her new wings…what’s the strangest, or creepiest thing your child (or yourself) wanted to be for Halloween?
