So as most of you know we bought a house in December…and that I’ve been trying my darndest to make it cuter! You see, we drove by or looked at this house on the internet SEVERAL times before I would agree to even look at it…because it had NO curb appeal.
I am only showing you in these pictures one half of the house…the other side is even stranger than this because of the addition that the previous owners added on. I am grateful they added it on, don’t get me wrong, my master bedroom, my craft room, my amazing dining room and second garage are all part of the addition…they just didn’t give a lot of thought to how the outside looked I don’t think.
So because of that, the house is kind of a weird shape, the colors are not pretty and it was just hard for me to see the potential, until I actually went inside and realized it was perfect for our family. I have vision for most things, I can see how I can change things up to make them better, but I have struggled a quite a bit with trying to see the potential for some curb appeal…and man does my house need it!
I would love some input from you! I will tell you what I’ve done so far with each section of this part of my house and what my current ideas are, and I would love for you to jump in and let me know what you think!
Here is my front stoop. I added the wreath, and the door numbers before and just put some beautiful hydrangeas in the flower box. I can’t change the paint color of the house…not in the budget. I can change the trim color and paint my door though, so I am thinking of just trimming it in white and painting my door maybe a navy blue? I will also paint the flower box and I was actually thinking of painting it white and then painting the middle board the same navy blue. I also am trying to figure out what to do with that step. I can’t make it higher because people will trip on it. What do I do with that? Should I add another step at the same height as the door? Extend the little “porch” under the windows? I also need to get a new welcome mat, but I am waiting to paint so that I know what colors I actually end up with.
Next are these front flower beds. The dark green hose runs our sprinklers, but the other one was completely unnecessary in our front yard because sprinklers have great coverage, so I stored that in the garage. I moved the rocks around and buried what I could of the sprinkler hose under the dirt. There isn’t much to be seen of it now, unless you are looking at it sideways.
I cleaned up the dirt and added the flower pots, one covering the green cap for the sprinklers. I am planning on adding some bushes or shrubs or something next to the house and maybe I could learn how to build a bench and put a couple of those in there? Of course if I extend the porch under the windows then I will definitely want a bench, and the flower pots will just sit on there as well, and that would eliminate the need for bushes….hmmmm….
And can we talk about the windows? Inside they are AWESOME! Huge deep window sills, basically window seats where the kids sit and read. Outside they poke out of the house about a foot. I can’t really add shutters without it looking strange, and flower boxes would be hidden under them unless I built them clear out…What should I do there? They need something!
Finally I have the front and side bark chipped areas. We trimmed the trees back, so they weren’t hitting anyone walking on the sidewalk, and we are discussing the possibility of turning the pine tree into a tree house. You should have the seen the weeds in this area, YUCK! After that long day, I don’t really want to be doing that again, so ground covering flowers or ivy? Put down a weed mat and cover it in more bark chips? I would love any input here! My lawn also has this curved line all around, what would be the best way to define that line without breaking the bank?
I’ll be working on it again this weekend, so any and all advice and opinions would be much appreciated! What do you do to add curb appeal to your home?
